Monday Musings: God is Worthy Because God is Good

Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. (Matthew 10:29)

For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.  (Psalms 100:5)

Because God is absolutely great in power and majesty, He has the ability to be absolutely good. This more than just a characteristic of God. It is something which He has the unhindered ability to carry out. There are lots of people who strive to do and to be good, but because of human limitations, lack of funds, lack of authority, etc., there is only so much good they can do. God has no such limitations. As almighty and all powerful, He can affect whatever good He so desires. What is truly worthy of praise is the fact that with all His power and might, He is good. Imagine how terrible it would be if He were not!

God is often blamed for all the evil in the world: “If He’s so good, then why ____?” The evil in the world is not the failing of God’s goodness. It is the result of man’s sin, his decision to go his own way – a way that is not good. In His grace, God allowed man to choose his own way. So what the world has become is the result of man’s own choosing. In response to all the chaos that man has caused, God pleads:

Matthew 11:28-30

(28)  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

(29)  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

(30)  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Why does God offer man such rest in the face of all the turmoil that man’s sin has caused? Because God is just good like that.
