Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded. (Proverbs 13:13)
The truth of God’s Word is nothing if not simple. Maybe that’s why we trip over it so often. We’re so busy looking for some “higher truth” that we miss the fact that God’s truth meets us where we live. (See Proverbs 8:1-3.) Our passage puts it plainly: Despise [disrespect, treat with contempt] the law and be destroyed (v. 13). Fear [reverence, respect] the commandment and be blessed. Those are Bible truths as sure as gravity, and like gravity, they are principles that are not limited to believers. Even when non-believers exercise biblical truth (knowingly or unknowingly) they realize God’s blessings. How much more then should we as God’s people reverence God’s truth? Ignoring it would be like ignoring gravity.
